The story
Before the Roval, before the oval, there was a hilly, boulder-strewn stretch of old fields outside Charlotte. When ground was broken in 1959, crews hit granite under the soil and had to blast it out with dynamite, and the bill soared. The opening race slipped three weeks, to June 1960, and the brand-new asphalt broke up under the cars; some ran with screens and sheet metal to fend off flying rocks.
Framed, the whole layout hangs in one piece: the oval in a muted line where the Roval leaves it, the infield loop, the Backstretch Chicane and the Frontstretch Chicane lettered in, all seventeen turns numbered. A road course laid over blasted granite, now on your wall.
