The story
Virginia International Raceway was built against the grain. In the mid-1950s, a group of North Carolina car enthusiasts went looking for a place to build a road course in the heart of stock car racing country, and found it on the state line. When the project was announced in 1956, a local paper dreamed of 100,000 people. It opened in August 1957 on just over three miles of fresh asphalt; today the full course measures 3.27 miles (5.26 km).
Framed, the whole circuit hangs in one piece: the Front Straight down one side, the Climbing Esses across the top, Oak Tree at the far end and the long Back Straight running back to the Roller Coaster and Hog Pen, all seventeen turns numbered. A road course in stock car country, now on your wall.
