The story
Some of the mountain's corners were named by the paddock itself. In practice in 1947, a motorcyclist fell at the corner then known simply as The Elbow and smashed his elbow on the track; a fellow rider renamed it Forrest's Elbow, after him, to the amusement of everyone but him, and he was back racing the next day. A year earlier, after a crash into the sandbags at Pit Corner, that day's winner is said to have written a new name on the fence that evening: Murray's Corner.
Framed, the whole mountain fits into a single glance: the climb after Hell Corner, the run across the top past the parks where fans camp for days, and the long dive down Conrod Straight to Murray's Corner, all twenty-three turns numbered. From across the room it is the shape fans simply call the Mountain.
