The story

The Roval’s first big fall race, in 2018, was decided in its very last corner. On the final lap, the car in second dove inside the leader at the Frontstretch Chicane, braked too late and spun them both, and the car running third slipped between the two to win. That chicane is lettered on the poster, beside pit lane, home to the last three of its 17 turns on a 3.669 km (2.28 mile) lap.

The oval came first. It opened in 1960, a mile and a half of asphalt with 24-degree banking, and for decades its big fall race ran around it and nothing else. In 2017 the track announced a change: a road course threaded through the infield and stitched to the oval, what racers had long called a roval, road course plus oval. When it opened in 2018, it became the first road course ever to host a race in the stock car championship’s playoffs, introduced in 2004.

From inside the car, every lap is a fall and a climb: down from the oval into the infield, then back up onto the 24-degree banking, with 11 m (35 ft) between the low end of the infield and the highest point, up on the banking, about as tall as a three-story building. The plan never stopped changing: announced with 13 turns, opened with 17, a wider backstretch chicane in 2019, and in 2024 a longer straight and a sharp hairpin at Turn 7 that throws the field back onto the banking.

The poster draws that last version, the 2024 layout, with the oval in a muted line wherever the Roval leaves it, seventeen numbered turns and both the Backstretch Chicane and the Frontstretch Chicane lettered in. The Roval hosted the fall race for eight seasons, this version only the last two, in 2024 and 2025; in 2026 the race went back to the oval. Blueprint, the drafting-room edition, suits a track drawn over another track. The chicane that settled its first big race is right there on your wall.
