The story

At Turn 4 of the Algarve, the track disappears. As the cars crest the hill, the road ahead drops out of sight, and it is only one of several blind moments on a circuit built straight onto the rolling hills of southern Portugal. Better known as Portimão, it runs 4.653 km (2.89 miles) clockwise through fifteen turns, climbing at up to 6 percent and falling at up to 12.

It went up in just seven months in 2008, designed to follow the dramatic undulations of the land rather than flatten them. It was approved for racing in mid-October and held its first race on November 2. The region’s name comes from the Arabic al-gharb, “the west,” and two corners take theirs from the coast around it: Lagos and Portimão itself.

The double right at Portimão sums it up: the cars climb about 12 meters, nearly four stories, into a blind corner, then fall 16 meters, five stories, on the way out. It has been likened to the old Nürburgring and to Spa, and it is nicknamed the roller coaster. Its first big endurance race, in 2009, was run through the night, from one evening to the next morning.

The poster numbers all fifteen turns and letters in the corner names, from Primeira, the first, to the double right of Portimão, with the pit lane and some of the circuit’s many alternative layouts in muted lines. Midnight, the black edition, suits a track whose endurance story began in the dark. On a wall, at least, you can see every turn before you reach it.
