The story
Zandvoort’s main straight is built on what the war knocked down. To keep the Allies off the beach, the occupiers demolished dozens of hotels and some 600 houses along the coast, and their rubble became the first layer of the road that is now the straight. The North Sea beach is about 350 meters (1,150 ft) away, and when the wind blows in, it carries sand onto the track.
The story goes that the town’s mayor, trying to spare his people forced labor, persuaded the Germans to build a broad, straight avenue through town, to serve after the war as a parade road for the victors. That parade never came. Instead, the avenue and the roads around it became a circuit, and on August 7, 1948, the first race ran among the dunes. Scheivlak recalls an old boundary in those dunes, and Tarzanbocht, legend has it, is named after a burly local nicknamed Tarzan, who would only give up his vegetable garden if the corner carried his name.
The Grand Prix left in 1985; it came back on September 5, 2021, after 36 years, to grandstands awash in orange. For the return, two corners were rebuilt with about 18 degrees of banking, twice the angle of Indianapolis and almost as steep as the steepest stretch of the world’s steepest street. The designer behind them said the whole horizon tilts. In August 2026, the last scheduled Grand Prix at Zandvoort was run.
The poster numbers all fourteen turns and letters in nine names, from Tarzanbocht to Arie Luyendykbocht, over 4.259 km (2.65 miles) run clockwise. Blueprint, the drafting-room edition, has the deep blue of the North Sea beyond the dunes, and it suits a track drawn over a parade road that never saw its parade. A seaside circuit on your wall, with the sand left outside.
