The story
Laguna Seca was built in 60 days. Work began in the first week of September 1957: the layout was roughed out in the dirt, staked, and the bulldozers moved in; on November 9 the ribbon was cut for its first race, on nine turns and 3.06 km (1.9 miles). Legend has it the Corkscrew was born when the foreman went to lunch and told the bulldozer driver to get down the hill any way he could. And the story goes that no one drew a map of the track until it was paved.
Framed, today’s lap hangs in one piece: the infield loop added in 1988, the Rahal Straight, the Corkscrew and the Rainey Curve, eleven turns numbered plus 8a. The map came after the track; now it’s on your wall.
